Ice Warning – March 10, 2026
Port of Thunder Bay is reminding all members of the public that ice conditions in and around the harbour, waterfront, and shipping lanes are extremely dangerous and unpredictable.
Due to fluctuating temperatures, currents, vessel activity, and changing weather conditions, ice may be thin or unstable—even when it appears solid. Ice in active port areas is especially hazardous and does not freeze evenly.
For your safety, the Port of Thunder Bay strongly advises:
– Do not walk, skate, snowmobile, or drive on harbour ice or near shipping lanes
– Stay well clear of docks, piers, breakwalls, and vessel tracks, where ice is weakest
– Keep children and pets away from the ice at all times
– Obey all posted warning signs and barriers
Falling through ice can lead to serious injury or death due to cold-water shock, strong currents, and limited rescue access in certain areas.
Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe. Please choose designated, monitored areas for winter activities and exercise extreme caution near the waterfront.
